GMG has provided Scitech with four new games for their latest exhibition, “Going Places”.
First cab off the rank is Recumbent Racer, a cycling simulation that lets kids find out which bike is best: a normal racing bike or a recumbent bike. We provided fully lit and baked 3D models of the “Tour de France”-styled race track, the bikes, and their riders (which we also rigged for Scitech’s in-house game engine).
All up, about 200Mb of textures and geometry.
Next up was Luggage Loader. This arrived as a quick pencil sketch from Scitech of the luggage handling system in an airport. We were asked to find the game in the details. The schematic of the luggage system was imported into Flash and we quickly had a running simulation to show to Scitech and get their feedback. After a few revisions, we started on the presentation style. The game was built as an info-graphic and integrated 3D visuals with text panels and interactive game elements.
Third game was Big Engine, an update to an original Scitech four-stroke engine simulation. A car engine can be disassembled for the kids to rebuild it. When all engine pieces are in place, the ignition key can be turned over and the engine revved. Players can easliy have the engine rebuild itself (if they need help) and when pieces are touched and dragged into place, a small information panel gives extra interpretive text about the part.
Last game was Vehicle Jigsaw, a remake of an existing Flash game. Scitech provided art assets, sound and game result matricies and GMG put it all together for presentation on a large touch screen. The game is an exploration of vehicle technologies, letting players design their own cars and see how eco-friendly they are.
